Chatback Records proudly presents Depeche Modes front man David Gahan in one of the most compulsive interviews ever given. The singer talks openly and honestly about his attempted suicide and drug problems. It is therefore no surprise that Gahan's newly found appreciation of life, and sobriety, has coincided with the release of their excellent new album Ultra.

But that album was very much a Vince Clarke album, and he owns the rights to that song of course, so it’s been in so many commercials and it pops up. I remember we went to his publisher’s at the time and they sat us all down and they said, You know, Vince, you’re going to be driving a Rolls Royce when these lot are still on a tandem, pointing to me and Martin and Fletch EW: Is it true that this is the only Depeche single that did better in the . DG: I think so. England is our home country and we’ve had continued success there - to a limit.

With all Depeche Mode have accomplished, it's still safe to say they've never done anything quite like new album 'Spirit' before. The band's 14th album, due out this Friday (Mar. 17th) on Columbia Records, sees them bracing the current political landscape in an unprecedentedly direct manner.

Regarding the title, Gahan says we all have a consciousness, and anytime we want we can stop and choose to feel what’s really going on there. We all know when something’s not right. Depeche Mode introduced itself to the world in 1981 with the catchy synth-pop of ‘Speak & Spell

Depeche Mode (/dəˌpɛʃ-, diː-, dɪ-/) are an English electronic band formed in Basildon, Essex, in 1980. The group currently consists of a trio of Dave Gahan (lead vocals and co-songwriting), Martin Gore (keyboards, guitar, and chief songwriting), and Andy Fletcher (keyboards). Depeche Mode released their debut album Speak & Spell in 1981, bringing the band onto the British new wave scene. Founding member Vince Clarke left after the release of the album; they recorded A Broken Frame as a trio.

When Alan Wilder left Depeche Mode, it was basically Martin and me. Martin and I had to become something together, and we’re still becoming that. That’s still a work in progress. I would be interested how it’d sound if you actually mashed our last two records together. Martin did an album called MG. Like me, Martin is a big fan of blues and gospel music. But he’s also a big fan of turning something inside out, taking those elements and then doing something completely different with them musically, simply to make it interesting for himself.

Ultra is the ninth studio album by English electronic music band Depeche Mode. It was released on 14 April 1997 by Mute Records. It was the band's first album following the departure of Alan Wilder, who had become disillusioned with life in the band. Wilder's departure and lead singer Dave Gahan's drug problems, which culminated in a near-fatal overdose, had caused speculation that Depeche Mode was finished.

Depeche Mode: 'We're dysfunctional. Maybe that's what makes us tick'. But as the 80s wore on, most of them grew either less weird or less successful. Depeche Mode's evolution from gauche synth-poppers to brooding electro-rock giants (their songs have been covered by Johnny Cash and the Saturdays ) was unforeseeable, unrepeatable and inexplicable even to them.
