1. Come On Honey Lyrics. 1970’ was recorded in 1969, but not released until 1995. Thus, the title of this compilation of Alex Chilton’s first solo recordings is a bit misleading. Producer Terry Manning has always maintained that this should more accurately be called ‘1969’. Writers Alex Chilton & Terry Manning. More Alex Chilton albums. From Memphis to New Orleans. Set. Written-By – Alex Chilton (tracks: 1-10, 12), Richard Rosebrough (tracks: 12), Terry Manning (tracks: 10, 12). Notes. Recorded in 1970 at Ardent Studios.

Time has been most kind to the transitional set of recordings Alex Chilton made in 1969, those that have subsequently become known as 1970. A moment caught between the dying embers of the Box Tops and the incipient birth of Big Star, these exploratory sessions have the heady and compelling air of an artist breaking away from stylistic restraint to seek their own true voice. In 1996, Manning remixed the recordings and presented them on Ardent as the 1970 album, so-called because there was residual nervousness over the fact that, at the time the sessions occurred, Alex was still technically a Box Top. Free Again: The ‘1970’ Sessions appends that first release with bonus material for a reappraisal of what is, frankly, an overlooked gem.

After the dissolution of the Box Top in 1969 Alex Chilton began to record music for his first solo album. This happened over a longer period during of 1970. Like the early Big Star the album is recorded in John Fry's Ardent Studios, and Chilton are musically supported by Ardent acquaintances such as as producer and t Terry Manning and drummer Richard Rosebrough. Logically the music places itself somewhere between the soul-pop sound of the Box Tops and the more progressive power-pop-oriented sound of Big Star.

Alex Chilton (Memphis, Tennessee, December 28, 1950 – New Orleans, Louisiana, March 17, 2010) was an American songwriter, guitarist, singer, and producer, best known for his work with the pop-music bands The Box Tops and Big Star.

In 1970, he abandoned it to co-found Big Star, the Memphis version of the Beatles. Free Again finds Chilton, not yet 20, in fast bloom. The title track, The EMI Song (Smile for Me) and Every Day as We Grow Closer are ravishing, original amalgams of the Beach Boys, the British Invasion and country soul.

Alex Chilton: 1970 (Ardent, 1996) I'm going to cheat a bit under the circumstances and include a few albums that so far have only been released on CD. This is one of them, and it was the first issue (and only, as far as I know) of Chilton's legendary and nearly-lost first attempt at a solo album. It's a doozy, as he proves that no matter how good much of the music created under the Box Tops name was, the producers might have been better off leaving the band to their own devices.
