The Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra was a jazz big band formed by trumpeter Thad Jones and drummer Mel Lewis in New York in 1965. The band performed for twelve years in its original incarnation, including a 1972 tour of the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War. The band won a Grammy Award for the album Live in Munich and in 2009 for the album Monday Night Live at the Village Vanguard.

Well, besides those gripes I have about this album, it is a great introduction to the Thad Jones & Mel Lewis Orchestra. Aside from the shotty, so-called 'remastering,' the sound is ok. If you are looking to expand your Thad Jones or Mel Lewis collection, or jazz collection for that matter, or you are a completist, I would recommend purchasing Central Park North and Consummation separately. A very, very creative person. I enjoyed the work he did with Count Basie but when he formed his own band with Mel Lewis his imaginitive musicianship was unleashed. This type of music is not to every person's taste, although The Groove Merchant has a groove that most fans of big band music could appreciate.
