The Mikron Theatre Company are the leading theatre company that tours the inland waterways of Britain by narrowboat. Their talented casts of four (always two women and two men) have at least one instrument and strong singing capabilities. They also comprise their own stage management team so sets, props and costume have to be easy to carry and compact enough to travel onboard the boat. Lighting is basic with no effects, changes or blackouts. The scheme is unpaid but travel expenses to Marsden, West Yorkshire will be covered (standard class off-peak rail fare). Participation in the scheme places you on a shortlist for fully paid commission and offers a development opportunity.

Mikron Theatre Company in 1977. Sarah Lucas, Mike Lucas, Derek Harman, Matthew Marsh, Buffy Davis Photograph: Ray Carpenter. Here's their route, leaving Gnosall at 4am on Monday 10 September and arriving at Worsley near Salford by 8pm on Tuesday 11 September, if all goes to plan. The normal sort of canal craft, pottering about on a holiday, would probably do the same journey in six days. Peter Toon, Mikron's producer and one of the flyboaters, says: We've got a good crew, specially Sam who was brought up on Tyseley from the age of three months and knows her, and how to get the best out of her like the back of his hand. Lucas junior mixed in with the actors as a boy and learned a lot from them. He now works in TV and film production but is taking time off to support the scamper north.

The English group folded in 1984, having lost its grant from the Arts Council of Great Britain. The Scottish group lost its funding from the Scottish Arts Council in 2006, though Artistic Director Lorenzo Mele successfully secured funding for a further year from April 2007. MARSDEN'S Mikron Theatre Company spend each summer touring the inland waterways aboard their narrowboat Tyseley, albeit the old girl had to spend a month off duty this time for emergency repairs. The actors nevertheless ploughed on, indeed putting their best foot forward to keep their two shows on the road/water.

The theatre itself sports a stage ‘in-the-round’ and can seat an audience of up to 700, making it the largest theatre of its kind in Britain. Annually, the Royal Exchange gives an average of 350 performances and puts on a programme that intertwines the classic performance arts, revivals and contemporary writing. The Royal Shakespeare Company is arguably one of the most-famous theatre companies in the world. The ensemble connects audiences all over the world with the works of William Shakespeare, as well as with a wide-ranging selection of contemporary playwrights and actors. The company is mostly located in Stratford-upon-Avon, the place of Shakespeare’s birth, where performances are often accompanied by workshops and educational programmes.

Canals of Britain is a comprehensive and absorbing survey of the entire canal network of the British Isles - the first of its kind.
