Gang of Losers is the third full-length album from Montreal band The Dears. It was released on August 29, 2006 in Canada under the Maple Music Recordings label and on October 3, 2006 in the USA under the Arts & Crafts label. On July 10, 2007, Gang of Losers was announced as a finalist for the 2007 Polaris Music Prize, alongside such other acts as Feist, Junior Boys, and Chad VanGaalen. This isn't to say that Gang of Losers is just Murray Lightburn playing an acoustic guitar and crooning forlornly, but it does mean that the Dears seem to have traded in their strings and horns for more straightforward electric guitar and keyboard riffs

Montreal sextet the Dears are probably sick to death of the Britpop revival tags pinned to them like tails to a birthday party donkey- fed up with the talk of Morrissey-this, Blur-that and tired of the myriad synonyms for "orchestral. That's OK: It's easy enough to talk about Gang of Losers, the band's third full-length in their -long career, sans synopses of 1995's End of a Hollywood Bedtime Story and 2003's No Cities Left. There are no plot twists from here, no surprises. There's a song called "You and I Are a Gang of Losers", and subject matter's stuff like "You and I are on the outside of almost everything" repeated ad infinitum. The band is, if anything, more confident than ever, but the sound's grandiosity too easily verges on melodrama, a vable misery.

On the third track of the Dears' new album, Gang of Losers, lead singer Murray Lightburn pleads over and over again, "I swear, I swear, I swear to you". The band propels itself forward and Lightburn's voice croons and rises above it. It's a gorgeous moment in an album full of them. It also precisely illustrates what most critics nitpicked about the band on past albums. The full-throated voice of longing vaguely reminded some of Morrissey. The band's complex, bursting orchestral pop sound was a little too Brit-pop.

Almost, because when the Dears get it right and Lightburn's voice soars atop the kind of chiming riff that has long been integral to literate indie-rock yet here, inexplicably, sounds wonderfully novel, they are practically impossible to fault. Gang of losers? As Damon Albarn might have put it back when he was walking with the swagger of Ray Winstone and going dog racing with the boys: they're 'avin' a larf, aren't they? The Dears are a Canadian indie rock band from Montreal, Quebec. The band is led by the husband-and-wife duo of singer-guitarist Murray Lightburn and keyboardist Natalia Yanchak. The band formed in 1995 and released their first album, End of a Hollywood Bedtime Story, in 2000. Their orchestral, dark pop sound and dramatic live shows established The Dears as part of the then-emerging Canadian indie renaissance.
