Aretha is the thirty-first studio album by American singer Aretha Franklin, originally released in 1986, on Arista Records. It is the third album with the Aretha title to be released by Franklin, following her 1961 album and 1980 album.

The preacher’s offspring grew up thoroughly steeped in the sung and spoken cadences of the gospel, in churches where smelling salts were always at hand to revive those overcome by spiritual possession. Like my father, Aretha wrote in her autobiography, From These Roots (1999), the church always gave me a special kind of love. Rejecting formal keyboard lessons as a child, she learned to play by ear and mastered the techniques of gospel piano. She was also falling. Her first album, recorded in churches across America, displayed the girl’s astonishing range, precocious control and blazing fervour. Seeing her potential, influential friends including Gordy and the singer Sam Cooke tried to lure her over to the secular side.

Her last album was A Brand New Me, released in November 2017, which paired archival vocal recordings for Atlantic Records with new orchestral arrangements by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Her last original recording was Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics in 2014, which included her take on Adele’s Rolling in the Deep. American history wells up when Aretha sings, former US president Barack Obama said of her performance of (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman at the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors. Her voice was unique, her piano playing underrated – she was one of my favourite pianists.

The Very Best of Aretha Franklin. Aretha Franklin (March 25, 1942 - August 16, 2018) was a Memphis, Tennessee born and Detroit, Michigan reared American iconic gospel, soul, and R&B singer, songwriter and pianist. Many have called her "The Queen Of Soul" and "Lady Soul". She is renowned for her soul and R&B recordings (on many, of which, she accompanied herself on keyboards and piano, a skill she learned at an early age, learning to play by ear, according to lifetime friend Smokey Robinson) but was also adept at jazz, rock, blues, pop, and gospel.

Image caption Aretha Franklin in 1967, the year she released her album I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You. Aretha Louise Franklin was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on 25 March 1942. She was the daughter of CL Franklin, a Baptist minister, and his wife Barbara, an accomplished gospel singer. By the time she was six, she and her family had moved to Detroit. There the young Franklin learned to play the piano and began singing in her father's church. Her father's serial infidelities finally saw the break-up of her parents' marriage

Aretha Franklin: The 10 defining songs from her 60-year career. There aren't many duds in Aretha Franklin's six-decade catalog, but these are the 10 songs that helped define the Queen of Soul's career. The wider public is most familiar with the radio hits, but Franklin’s best-selling work actually came via the 1972 gospel album Amazing Grace, recorded with the Rev. James Cleveland live at a Los Angeles church. The spiritual power of Franklin’s Detroit church roots soar through in this anointed, ecstatic gospel epic. A powerhouse vocal from Aretha and greasy slide guitar by Duane Allman transform The Band’s classic into a swinging slice of soul transcendence.
