From the Heart is the third album led by saxophonist Hank Crawford featuring performances recorded in 1961 and 1962 for the Atlantic label. This is an early highpoint for Crawford. All compositions by Hank Crawford except as indicated. Don't Cry Baby" (Saul Bernie, James P. Johnson, Stella Unger) - 4:22.

Highlights include "The Peeper," "Shake-A-Plenty," "Please Send Me Someone to Love," "Dat Dere," "Mr. Blues," "Two Years of Torture" and "Makin' Whoopee"; the latter is one of several numbers in which Crawford also plays some effective piano.

Rather than stick completely with the down-home soul-jazz rituals that have served him well in his previous several releases, Crawford mixes up his pitches in this more-inclusively titled outing - or he seems to. For once the semi-samba stylings and straight-ahead jazz solos of "Grab the World" and funky gospel flavor of the Crusaders tune "Way Back Home" are disposed of, and Crawford returns to the Mother Church, as it were, for the core of the disc.

Crawford was musical director for Ray Charles before embarking on a solo career, during which he released many well-regarded albums for jazz record labels CTI Records and then Milestone Records. Crawford was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He began formal piano studies at age nine and was soon playing for his church choir.

Hank Crawford, the last survivor of Ray Charles's three great saxophone players, whose inflamed and exhortatory alto sound was a guiding influence for many, has died at the age of 74. His death followed within a month those of baritone saxophonist Leroy Cooper and tenorist David "Fathead" Newman. Crawford recorded extensively for Atlantic in the 1960s, often with Newman on board - his debut, The Art of Hank Crawford (1960), featured fellow musicians drawn from the Charles contingent - and his sophisticated ear for gospelly "sax-choir" harmonies gave new twists to what could have been formulaic music. Crawford's groups also maintained commercially attractive connections with the Charles sound, and the saxophonist's writing skills brought him chart hits too, such as Misty (1961) and Skunky Green (1964).

Hank Crawford was an alto sax sensation since he stepped out of the Ray Charles band back in 1963. A signature piercing, full bodied, blues, soul, and gospel drenched tone, sets him apart from the alto pack. He has an instantly recognizable voice, and his excellent choice of material suits his style perfectly. He is a bluesman turned preacher on the sax, and the sermon is always on time. Bennie Ross Crawford Jr. was born in Memphis, Tennessee on December 21, 1934, began formal piano studies at age nine and was soon playing for his church choir
