S due to the misleading cover art), the former art-school students couldn't completely leave behind their arty pretentions, but power-pop eventually prevails. The first time I heard this release, I was sure that this was a Retro-Project. This probably is due to the super-fat production of Richard Gottehrer, the best (pre)-80ties drumsound I've ever listened to on a postpunk-record...

This reissue CD of Yachts debut LP from 1979 is actually named after the US pressing (S.O.S.) and while it has a different track listing this Japanese compact disc reissue actually has the same songs as the original UK Radar issue. Also the cover artwork is same as the UK version so it is very faithful to the original, rather than to the later US release.The music itself is very catchy new wave power pop with (little surprisingly) great keyboards all over the tracksto give the band a distinctive sound among other power pop outfits. Worth of mention is also the cynical lyrics that manifest all songs on the album, providing a very quirky view on the world and human relationships. Overall songwriting is on an excellent if not brilliant level and thus ensuring that there are absolutely no fillers in this record, only killers. All songs are group penned originals, no covers whatsoever. If one has to choose a song that defines the album and is the standout track that is definitely "Yachting Type" which is a perfect pop song and tells the true story of mindset of some, if not all, women. (It also can be found in a Rhino DIY New Wave compilation CD) but the fact is there are plenty of other great tracks on this CD to choose from and it's unfair to just bring that one up. Other notable songs would be the opener "Box 202", the very cynical "Love You Love You" with it's absolutely defining lyrics and "Easy To Please" which I can't help but it brings my ex-girlfriend to my mind whom I still love. (I'm easy to please but I need her!) Sad I know. But it's one of the strengths of this album that the lyrics really "speak" to a listener who has experienced the darker side of (love) life. It's just one of those very rare 5* albums that one comes across only so often, and it's a crying shame there is no other reissues available than this, now already OOP 1998 printing.I can't but recommend this record for all who love well crafted catchy new wave pop songs with meaningful lyrics with a wink of an eye (of the darker humor).
