Still Grazing is a compilation album by South African jazz trumpeter Hugh Masekela. The album is a retrospective collection of his compositions recorded over the period 1966–1974 Contents. Tracks 10 11 were recorded in March-April 1974 at Wally Heider Studios in Los Angeles. Tracks 1 2 3 were originally released on The Emancipation of Hugh Masekela. Track 4 was originally released on Hugh Masekela Is Alive and Well at the Whisky. Tracks 5 6 were originally released on The Promise of a Future. Tracks 7 8 were originally released on Masekela.
Musically speaking, Still Grazing is strong; but then, in making a case for Masekela's career, it ought to be. It starts off with "Child of the Earth," something of an acquired taste when it comes to vocals, and it features the vibrant "Ha Lese Le Di Khanna" and the noteworthy cover of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Felicidade," all from The Emancipation of Hugh Masekela (1966). There is, of course, "Grazing in the Grass," and the equally rousing "Up, Up, and Away. But Still Grazing is better suited to the newcomer, and it is unlikely that newcomers will want to read Masekela's 400-page life story after hearing a few tunes from an eight-year span of his career. As it stands, this disc is of no value to collectors and limited use to Masekela neophytes. Visit Blue Thumb Records online or browse Douglas Payne's comprehensive Hugh Masekela discography.

Died Johannesburg, January 23, 2018) was a South African flugelhorn and cornet player. In 1961, as part of the anti-apartheid campaign, he was exiled to the United States where he was befriended by Harry Belafonte.
Still Grazing is the soundtrack to Masekela's recent autobiography of the same name, designed to give consumers a taste of Hugh Masekela, the musician, while his book gives them an impression of Hugh Masekela, the man. Stewart Levine, Masekela's longtime producer, was asked to compile the songs he thought would best represent Masekela. The two most impressive tracks, "Gold" and "Mace and Grenades", come from Masekela's 1968 release Masekela, an unsettling and unpopular album that alienated much of the fan base he had won with "Grazing in the Grass". A single listen to these selections will show that Levine's defense is entirely unnecessary.
