The emotional folk music of the Portuguese, Fado's existence dates back at least as far as 1829. By this time, the Portuguese culture contained a substantial African and mixed race (primarily Brazilian) population, most of them lower-class laborers centered in the Alfama area of Lisbon.

Fado was Portugal's best-loved music, until it became associated with the fascist regime. Now a new generation of fadistas are reclaiming the style - with a little help from jazz, gospel and dub. By John Lewis. This 1967 album is a great collection of ballads, heavily influenced by the more poetic fado of Coimbra. Christina Branco Post-Scriptum, (L'Empreiente Digitale). A Gen-X Lisbonite who came to fado in her late teens, Branco was one of the first to reinvigorate the genre, with a subtle bluesiness to her delivery. There are some awful albums with names like "Chillfado" that try to update fado for a clubby generation. Mariza and the Story of Fado will be shown on BBC4 in July.

Ana Moura (born 1979) is an internationally recognized Portuguese fado singer, and the youngest fadista to be nominated for a Dutch Edison Award. Ana Cláudia Moura Pereira was born 17 September 1979, in Santarém, Portugal. Ana Moura's debut album was Guarda-me a Vida na Mão (2003), followed by Aconteceu (2005). She sang in various nightspots in Lisbon and became known on television, performing fado with Antonio Pinto Basto.

In traditional/folk music, fado has had a significant impact, with Amália Rodrigues still the most recognizable Portuguese name in music, and with more recent acts, like Dulce Pontes and Mariza. The genre is one of two Portuguese music traditions in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists, with the other being Cante Alentejano. Regional folk music remains popular too, having been updated and modernized in many cases, especially in the northeastern region of Trás-os-Montes
