Following the release of the compilation . and the Posse in 1987, . released their debut album Straight Outta Compton on August 8, 1988 through Eazy-E’s Ruthless Records and Priority Records. This was seen as a seminal album for the rise of gangsta rap as the group presents their reality rap from the streets of Compton and South Central Los Angeles.

Straight Outta Compton is the debut studio album by American hip hop group . A, released August 8, 1988, on group member Eazy-E's record label Ruthless Records. Production for the album was handled by Dr. Dre with DJ Yella. The album has been viewed as the pioneering record of gangsta rap with its pervasive graphic profanity and violent lyrics. This was the group's only release with rapper Ice Cube prior to his 1989 departure.

It was later included in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and had a second act decades later, after its onscreen counterpart about .

Straight Outta Compton wasn't quite the first gangsta rap album, but it was the first one to find a popular audience, and its sensibility virtually defined the genre from its 1988 release on. It established gangsta rap - and, moreover, West Coast rap in general - as a commercial force, going platinum with no airplay and crossing over with shock-hungry white teenagers.
