Real Name: Joseph Arkadievich Levin. Profile: Russian pianist born in Moscow, December 1874 ; died on December 2, 1944. Josef Lhevinne Plays Concert I ‎(LP, Album). The Complete Recordings (Historical Recordings 1920-1937) ‎(CD, Comp).

Josef Lhevinne (1874-1944) The Complete Recordings Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756-1791) Sonata in D for two pianos K448 Robert SCHUMANN (1810-1856) Toccata in C Frühlingsnacht arr LISZT El Contrabandista ARR TAUSIG Frederic CHOPIN (1810-1849) Etude Op 10 No 6 Etude Op 25 Nos 6, 10, 11 Prelude Op 28 No s 16 and 17 Polonaise Op 53 Johann STRAUSS. Having moved to Berlin the Lhevinnes were interned during the First World War and moved to New York, where Josef made his first recordings for Pathé in 1920 or 21 (the precise date seems to be uncertain). Ward Marston’s transfers of these Pathés are a considerable improvement on the boxy Novello issue of the Complete Recordings, issued over a decade ago. We can better appreciate his exquisite pianism.

Rosina Lhévinne recalled that Hofmann heard her husband Josef Lhévinne play Liszt's Lorelei, a piece Hofmann had never heard but went on to play it "just like my Josef (Lhevinne)" for an encore at his concert later that day. Maurice Aronson, who served as Leopold Godowsky's assistant, recalled Hofmann learning Godowsky's Fledermaus transcription. He did experiment with short studio test recordings in 1935, and in retirement in California experimented with piano string electrical pickups and designing an additional spruce soundboard under the piano lid. At least three of his concerts in 1930's were recorded live.

CD 7 ( Historical Acoustic Recordings, 1901–1924 ): The earliest recording in the set is a rather rough-and-ready Blue Danube from the Vienna Drescher Orchestra in 1901. Other early ensemble recordings (on brass, strings, and marimbas) are obviously constrained by the limitations of the medium at this time. Recordings of the great American orchestras came later in the acoustic period. CD 8 ( Appendix: New Year’s Concert 1954, Part 2 ): The decision to round out the collection in this way is questionable, since this duplicates half of Opus Kura’s own previous release of the complete concert as a two-disc set-redundant for those of us who already have it, and will shortly be for those who don’t, as.

Lhevinne - the complete recordings - CD. Track Listings. Although the name of Josef Lhevinne, a pupil of Vassily Safonov, is engraved on the table of the Moscow Conservatory (he graduated from it in 1892), he is largely forgotten in Russia. On the contrary, Lhevinne is remembered in the USA, where he and his wife Rosina held teaching positions at the Julliard School of Music. This Naxos CD contains all his preserved recordings, both commercially issued and unissued: most of them are electric solo recordings made for US Victor from 1928 to 1936. 1920 for Pathé USA. Lhevinne was likely past his prime when he made his electric recordings: for the most part, all these are encores, not larger pieces. But the quality of these performances speaks for itself, and I am grateful for that the recorded legacy of this pianist is on the level of his legendary reputation.
