Atom TM - HD It's a curious twist of fate that HD, Uwe Schmidt's long-simmering new album as Atom TM, comes out on the same day as the new Justin Timberlake record. Schmidt makes spindly computer music for a highly conceptual German experimental label, and Timberlake is, needless to say, one of the planet's most iconic chart-toppers. Albums like Liedgut are pleasing on the ears, but they don't aim at our pleasure centers quite the way this one does. Listening to openers "Pop HD" and "Strom," you still imagine Schmidt smoothing his moustache in front of a computer monitor, coding hard-drive glitches and micro-slicing forments. The difference is the wonderfully simple and insidiously catchy scaffold he's fixing his sounds to.

Atom™ - Liedgut Uwe Schmidt is nothing if not prolific, a tireless innovator producing in numerous forms, for numerous markets, under numerous guises. Raster-Noton, publishing their first Schmidt product, promises "a romantic work," one that negotiates dualisms of science and the irrational, clarity and simplicity, ornament and mathematic purity. This isn't to say that you can't put on Liedgut to pass time on the train. It is, however, an album whose meaning changes significantly depending on its audience's familiarity with the contexts it cites. For my part, the challenge was appealing but, whether a function of differing tastes or relative ignorance, I often felt like I was missing half the message. Published, Sun, 1 Mar 2009.

However in my opinion its offers only 25 minutes of music which is short for an Album, some tracks are too short and they are nothing but a TV channel off sounds, and there's always the presence of this strange high pitch dog whistle in the background, maybe it is intended to keep the dogs at home quiet. My first listen leaves me the impression that this album is like taking notes from [k] by Disk Orchestra and throwing it in a bag with BGD and planting the seeds watching them grow. This is an unapologetic album towards anybody but the strongest of listeners with flexible ears and an appreciation for texture rich faith music. If you've been following Atom™ like I have for ages and were to stack up the other releases with the Atom™ namesake as opposed to his arms length of aliases. This is a different beast altogether and is going to be a very refreshing album for you and one that is (at long last) largely reserved for private listening only. Gone almost completely is the inherent straight faced cheekiness that Uwe has used as his calling card and has become the undisputed master of. There are references for listeners with the reserves to understand the joke. But this album in the end, is no laughing matter and is not social music. There are truly some moments of absolute beauty in this album. Something Uwe is quite capable of, but has left out for much of the last decade and has been utilized more as interlude breathing space and not as the central focus.

I have to disagree, to me the voice samples still contribute to something which is not very serious. Which is unfortunate, considering the intriguing sound scapes which he created.
