The former LP features three overlapping groups of musicians who were mostly based in San Francisco in the mid-'50s, with pianist Sonny Clark being a ringer. The Vince Guaraldi Quartet, the Ron Crotty Trio, and Jerry Dodgion's Quartet all show that the "modern" music played in San Francisco at the time was not much different than its better-known . The music swings, has smooth and light timekeeping from the rhythm section, and Dodgion's tone on alto is not that far from Bud Shank's at the time.

Orquesta Akokán SFJAZZ San Francisco Jazz Festival San Francisco, CA June 16. 2019. For their San Francisco premiere, the seven-member horn section stood on platforms to the right of the stage at SFJAZZ while singer Gómez stood center stage, and pianist Eckroth held forth on the 88s to the left. Everyone, save Gómez-who was dressed purely in white save for his tie and shiny, reflective black shoes-donned black jackets and light shirts. An instrumental followed. During "Yo Soy Para Ti," Gómez loaned his güiro to various audience members for safekeeping so he could freely dance and sing up a storm. La Corbata Barata" allowed Gómez to show off even more of his dance moves; couples got up to dance in the balconies, complimenting those already sweating on the packed dance floor.

The San Francisco Sound refers to rock music performed live and recorded by San Francisco-based rock groups of the mid-1960s to early 1970s. It was associated with the counterculture community in San Francisco, particularly the Haight-Ashbury district, during these years. San Francisco is a westward-looking port city, a city that at the time was 'big enough' but not manic like New York City or spread out like Los Angeles. Hence, it could support a 'scene'.

The San Francisco Bay Area has many jazz radio stations broadcasting everything from Big Band to smooth jazz. Many colleges in the area also feature jazz radio shows playing both the masters and the latest local and national up-and-coming talent

Jazz & Blues Scene. Mar 14, 2005, 5:13 AM. Save. Hi, my wife and I will be spending 5 days in SF from 28 June to 3 July. No longer kids (I am 60 and my wife is 50), we are big jazz and blues enthusiasts. We'll be staying at the York Hotel (I know about the Plush Room there, which, it seems, is also a jazz venue). I have no info for you about jazz clubs, sorry. But, I did want to relay to you that I just returned from. San Francisco on Monday after staying at The York Hotel for 4 nights. You have made an excellent choice in hotels, especially if you are on a budget. We enjoyed our stay there very much.
