A Series of Sneaks is the second album released by the band Spoon. It was released in 1998 by Elektra, then re-released with The Agony of Laffitte CD single tracks added on in 2002 by Merge Records. Despite being overlooked critically and commercially upon release, the album has since attained cult status. The music on this album has been compared to that of the Pixies, Wire, Pavement, Archers of Loaf, Gang Of Four, Robert Pollard and The Fall.

Complete your Spoon collection. This early indie-rawk iteration of Spoon was so great, bristling with raw energy and messy hooks. I always found it interesting how they transformed into such elegant bachelors on their later albums (I like that version too though). This reissue sounds fantastic too.

With A Series of Sneaks, Spoon became one of the unsung heroes of the guitar-driven post-punk tradition inhabited by bands such as Wire, Gang of Four, Hüsker Dü, and the Pixies. These were the guitar wizards who could package a variety of taut, terse, and inventive guitar sounds and unpredictable melodies into short, tight bursts one could still consider pop songs. Lead singer and guitarist Britt Daniel acts as the overachieving honors student of this tradition, flushing the spaces in between with an expansive melodic vocabulary comparable to Robert Pollard's

A Series of Sneaks is a mosaic of post-punk from both sides of the Atlantic. One the one side you have the tense minimalism of Wire, while on the other you have the surrealist rock of Pavement and The Pixies. In the middle it gets meshed in with Britt Daniel’s own fragile artistry of American rock and hallucinogenic storytelling. The album clocks in at 41 minutes, but contains 16 songs. It’s no wonder Spoon’s relationship with Elektra did not go beyond this album. Though it was a valiant effort that paid off much later, oddly after Spoon had returned to the indie scene.

Canciones Favoritas: Utilitarian, Reservations, No You're Not, Advance Cassete.

If "Series of Sneaks" has any flaw at all, it is that the album has a rather jagged feel. Yes, Spoon's music always sounds that way, but the songs feel like brief bursts of raw guitar rock. Spoon lets their raw musical power out in "A Series of Sneaks. This underrated rough gem is short, clocking in at only over half an hour, but it's an half-hour to treasure.

A Series Of Sneaks may not be the best Spoon LP, but it’s definitely the most underrated. There’s an unseen line of demarcation between this album and what came next, yet you can hear the same braintrust of Daniel and drummer Jim Eno flexing their talents here, even if they hadn’t yet happened upon the suave crispness that would come to characterize their work. When Merge reissued A Series Of Sneaks in 2002, they tacked the Laffitte songs onto the end of the album.
