Even though the program is a standard pairing of famous symphonies by Ludwig van Beethoven, and the live performances are by a modern orchestra, this intriguing hybrid SACD from Reference Recordings is a real adventure

Found recommendations around the web for this collection as one of the best recordings of Prokofiev's symphonies. After listening to the 6th and 7th today (and snippets of the 1st, 3rd, and 5th), I wholeheartedly agree! Extremely tight and quick in some places, deeply patient in others.

Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21, was dedicated to Baron Gottfried van Swieten, an early patron of the composer. The piece was published in 1801 by Hoffmeister & Kühnel of Leipzig. It is not known exactly when Beethoven finished writing this work, but sketches of the finale were found to be from 1795.
