Brahms: Piano Quintet in F minor, O. 4 - 3. Scherzo (Allegro) by Werner Haas & Members of the Berlin Philharmonic Octet & Alfred Malecek & Rudolf A Hartmann & Kunio Tsuchiya & Peter Steiner. 4. 30. Brahms: Piano Quintet in F minor, O. 4 - 4. Finale (Poco sostenuto - Allegro non troppo). 07-15-2014 Here are the Octet drawn from first chair players of the Berlin Philharmonic playing the Quintets of Johannes Brahms on this Philips 2 CD package recorded between December of 1970 and July of 1973. The sound is rather good for these very old performances. In the first selection, we have pianist Werner Haas joining the gentlemen from Berlin in the Piano Quintet in f-minor, )-. 34, a work the composer penned when he was 31 in 1864. A strong and bold opening sets a stormy tone for this work that finds refuge in the gentle and dreamy 2nd movement.

Brahms O. 4 Quintet was originally intended for strings, which the composer's friends found "too harsh and dark", according to the notes. He then reworked it for piano duo and then again into the present piano quintet form. It is still a dark and dramatic piece but it would be interesting to know whether it was more so originally. Brahms, however, destroyed the score. Whatever doubts he may have had, posterity has voted firmly in its favour and this is now at the pinnacle of the chamber music repertoire.

The Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34, by Johannes Brahms was completed during the summer of 1864 and published in 1865. It was dedicated to Her Royal Highness Princess Anna of Hesse. Like most piano quintets composed after Robert Schumann's Piano Quintet (1842), it is written for piano and string quartet (two violins, viola and cello). The work, "often called the crown of his chamber music," began life as a string quintet (completed in 1862 and scored for two violins, viola and two cellos).
