William Fitzsimmons (born 1978) is an American singer-songwriter, based in Nashville, perhaps best known for his songs "Passion Play" and "Please Don't Go", which aired during pivotal scenes in ABC's medical drama Grey's Anatomy. His first two full-length albums, Until When We Are Ghosts (2005) and Goodnight (2006), were completely self-produced and recorded by Fitzsimmons at his former home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Along with fellow traveler Sufjan Stevens, William Fitzsimmons has an ornate, virtually orchestral approach to what many would consider folk-based, confessional, singer/songwriter music. The Sparrow and the Crow, his third disc, is Fitzsimmons' musical depiction of a divorce. The melodies are anchored by guitar, banjo, or piano, then built upon as if they were mini-symphonies or mini-musicals, and the lyrics are harrowing and laden with metaphor. The mood is melancholy but not overwhelmingly so, and, expectedly, the songs are artfully constructed.

The Sparrow & The Crow is filled with Fitzsimmons' multi-instrument talents, incredible songwriting, and emotion filled lullaby like vocals. It's as soft and beautiful as anything Fitzsimmons has done, and yet it carries a certain weight throughout the entire album. I often find myself listen to certain albums when I'm in certain moods, as I'm sure most people do. While I was initially drawn to this album on a relaxing afternoon, I've come to find that I can listen to it at any time and it will PUT me in the mood to continue listening. With this album, William Fitzsimmons should cement himself in the upper ranks of modern songwriters. Despite many people following a similar approach to their music, Fitzsimmons performs in a way that makes him instantly recognizable. His understanding of how to write emotional and moving music will keep this album in my rotation for a long time.
