Talk about The Red Garland Trio - Manteca

Very Old Chap
Ray Barretto's bongos certainly add an energy to the ensemble making this one of Garlands more upbeat, swinging cuts. It's a very democratic affair with all getting their fair share of limelight, but I've got mixed feelings. The bongos work well on the Latin tinged title track, and Ray Barretto trades well with Chambers on "S'Wonderfull" as he does on with Taylor on "Lady Be Good", but I'm not sure if they add anything to "Exactly Like You", and on "Mort's Report" they are just an unwelcome distraction, really spoiling the tune for me. The CD reissue has a bonus of "Portrait of Jenny" which has the familiar, relaxed late night sound of the trio minus bongos.
