Dame Joan's husband Richard Bonygne leads the orchestra and the chorus under John Brown is excellent. Although this is in itself a superb Feldermaus, many will want to see this production for its farewell to Miss Sutherland. She and her long-term colleagues Marilyn Horne and Luciano Pavarotti treat us to several solos and duets in the Act II gala sequence, always a great vehicle for bringing out star talent for their turn. The gala is a lot of fun and quite moving too when Dame Joan sings "Home Sweet Home. The gala lasts about 40 minute and also includes two ballets to Strauss.
Johann Strauss - Die Fledermaus, Bonynge, Cox, Ashton, Royal Opera. Created by the waltz king Johann Strauss, Die Fledermaus is the dizzyingly silly story of Eisenstein who would rather party than go to gaol; his wife Rosalinde who is keen to teach him a lesson; and their pert maid Adele, whose eye for the main chance is unwavering. Then there are the high society types who move with ease between ballroom and prison cell. Featuring: Joan Sutherland, Robert Gard, Heather Begg, Anson Austin The Australian Opera Chorus The Elizabethan Sydney Orchestra. Actors: Dame Joan Sutherland, Richard Bonynge, Elizabethan Sydney Orchestra. Directors: Hugh Davison. Format: Multiple Formats, Classical, Color, NTSC.

The Royal Opera House (ROH) is an opera house and major performing arts venue in Covent Garden, central London. The large building is often referred to as simply "Covent Garden", after a previous use of the site of the opera house's original construction in 1732. It is the home of The Royal Opera, The Royal Ballet, and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. Originally called the Theatre Royal, it served primarily as a playhouse for the first hundred years of its history

Royal Opera House Orchestra, Covent Garden. Nancy Gustafson (sop) Rosalinde. Luciano Pavarotti (ten). René Soames (ten) Sali. Margaret Ritchie (sop) Sali as a child. All on stage, including the chorus, act well, and Julia Trevelyan Oman’s sets are the kind that rejoice in inspection by the television cameras. Humphrey Burton has supervised the filming so that the home viewer has the most privileged seat of all. Still, I’m glad I was there: no after-viewing can quite catch the passing moment on such an occasion, and when, at the end, a shower of gold rained down from the dome, it might magically have been Zeus’s very own.
