Turn Blue, the Black Keys‘ eighth studio album, opens with seven minutes of slow burn and eccentric fury. Weight of Love is the sort of uproar most bands would save for a big finish. But the Keys – singer-guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney – and their co-producer Brian Burton, . Danger Mouse, show their nerve upfront in a mounting tension of acoustic guitar and painted-desert ambience, cut open by Auerbach’s machete-treble twang and battered by Carney’s unhurried John Bonham-like rolls. That LP’s crunchy mix of Sixties soul and Midwest-garage glam was a rightful breakthrough. Turn Blue is a genuine turning point – into a decisively original rock, with a deeper shade of blues. You still get the minimalist vigor of the Keys’ first records a decade ago.

Turn Blue sounds distant and subdued, a murky-sounding collection of '70s stoner-rock facsimiles and swirling gray tones. The Black Keys have never been known for innovation-we're talking about a band that covered the fucking Beatles on their first album-but Turn Blue's strongest moments happen when they explore new territory. At nearly seven minutes, opener "Weight of Love" is a moody epic that carries melodic hints of the pleasantly stretched-out "Bullet in the Brain", meandering to a searing guitar solo that, for those with heavy investment in searing guitar solos, should more than suffice.

Even so, the prevailing atmosphere of "Turn Blue" is downbeat and spooky. El Camino"'s success, and the resulting inflation of expectations, seems to have had a depressive effect on Auerbach and Carney.

The band’s eighth album, Turn Blue, bears perhaps his biggest thumbprint. Auerbach and Carney have toyed with psychedelia, but Blue sounds more like an extension of Burton’s Broken Bells side project with Shins frontman James Mercer than the follow-up to the Keys’ muscular, arena-ready 2011 best-seller, El Camino. Blue opener Weight of Love is a nearly seven-minute dynamo with chemical assistance from drowsy organ hums and plenty of Claptonized soloing. The rest of the record glides through that same intergalactic place; it’s meticulously executed but slightly (and sleepily) monochromatic

Like Turn Blue, the latter album was written during a period of personal turmoil (Carney had just gotten divorced from his first wife, and was also harboring some acrimony towards Auerbach related to his own 2009 solo album, Keep It Hid), but the duo rekindled their relationship and made what would be their commercial breakthrough. Thematically, Brothers stuck to the aforementioned usual subjects, but took them on with a more layered, bigger sound that included more guitar tracks and keyboards, an idea first introduced on their previous album, 2008's Attack and Release. The other way Turn Blue is similar to Brothers is that both albums have a deep R&B influence running through them.
