Why is In Paris, Aries 1973 the only record Black Artists Group ever released? Band broke up before we had the opportunity to do a 2nd LP. Why did the band self-release the record? We believed in self-determination and owning our music, therefore we wanted to have a self released recording. Why is the album dedicated to Kada Kayan? He was a member of the Black Artists Group, he played electric bass and passed away at a very young age. The album was recorded on the day Jimi Hendrix died. Were you aware of that at the time? No, we were not aware of his passing on that day.

In Paris, Aries 1973 has recently been reissued on LP by Rank & File, and it’s a scorching set, moving from relatively denuded passages for multiple percussion and snake-charming sax, though to more reflective, intimate improvisations like ‘Re-Cre-A-Tion’ (which also dips into more playful, ‘toy instrument’ territory), and the occasional gust of all-in peak blowing, as. with ‘Something To Play On’. And the line-up is killer – Charles Bobo Shaw, Joseph Bowie (brother of Lester from Art Ensemble Of Chicago), Oliver Lake, Baikida Carroll and Floyd LeFlore. There’ll be more Black Artists Group material to come on Tim Barnes’ Quakebasket imprint – can’t wait. Part of that is due to the dub haze that envelops the album – instruments are regularly pushed through a maze of delays and echoes, such that the entire performance gets lost in itself, encircled by its own peculiarity.

In Paris, Aries 1973 reveals BAG’s musical affinities with the Art Ensemble of Chicago. These performances in Paris of Shaw’s Something to Play On and Lake’s Re-Cre-A-Tion, plus two collective sations, display the dedication to structural fluency and sensitivity to coloration that accompanied BAG’s unorthodox group dynamics and their unconventional instrumental combinations. Their album Boilin' got released on Aguirre just last year. Very eager to see how they will sound in a live set-up.

Floyd LeFlore (1940–2014) was a jazz composer, trumpet player, and poet from St. Louis. In 1968, LeFlore helped to found the Black Artists Group (BAG). LeFlore was the nephew of Clarence "Bucky" Jarman, a guitarist also of St. In high school, LeFlore attended Sumner High School with many other students who later became notable jazz musicians. From 1962-1965, LeFlore served in the military. For a brief time between 1972-1973, LeFlore lived and performed in Paris where the album In Paris.

The Black Artists Group was an unit not unlike that of The Art Ensemble of Chicago. Except they only recorded this one document and it only came out in France on a label named after the group. This is squeaky, spindly stuff and very OPEN and a good indication of what was happening in the early 70s with members Oliver Lake (later of the World Saxophone Quartet) and Joseph Bowie (Art Ensemble’s Lester Bowie’s bro, later to start Defunkt). Artist: Black Artists Group. Titel: In Paris, Aries 1973. Label: Rank And File.
