Dry is the debut studio album by English singer-songwriter and musician PJ Harvey, released on Too Pure Records on 30 March 1992. The album was recorded at The Icehouse, a local studio in Yeovil, United Kingdom. The first 5000 LPs and first 1000 CDs included demo versions of the album's tracks and Dry was subsequently released in the United States on Indigo Records in the US. Both versions were released in 1992.

The album immediately earned Harvey comparisons to Patti Smith and Sinead O’Connor but neither of those two greats would cover such a broad range of emotion so viscerally as Harvey does over the course of Dry, epitomizing the spirit of the 1990s. Standout tracks include Sheela-Na-Gig, Happy and Bleeding and Dress. Taking the raw power heard on Dry even further, PJ Harvey’s sophomore effort (and last as a band) offers a post-feminist punch to the gut from a band pushing their already intense sonic stylings to new heights

During the alternative rock explosion, several female singer/songwriters rose to prominence, but few have proved as distinctive or as widely praised as Polly Jean Harvey. Over the course of her career, Harvey established herself as one of the most individual and influential songwriters of her era, exploring themes of sex, religion, and political issues with unnerving honesty, dark humor, and a twisted theatricality. In 1997, Harvey began work on her fourth album, reuniting with Ellis and Flood on a set of introspective songs that that incorporated electronics into her music. The results were September 1998's Is This Desire?, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance.

Because of this I missed the effect of her raw early releases. Naturally, Stories From the City was the revelatory album for me to take a bit of a closer look at PJ. I have learnt to appreciate Dry and Rid of Me but they don't resonate with me me like they would if they'd been a soundtrack to my own youthful angst. Instead, I have gravitated more toward albums like White Chalk that are less revered by the Polly Jean diehards.

It's been a great year for PJ Harvey, with latest album Let England Shake winning critical plaudits and the Mercury prize. But is it her best album? We asked readers to briefly make the case for their favourite of the eight studio albums released to date

Today, we revisit PJ Harvey’s searing and monumental album from 1993. On September 24, 1993, Polly Jean Harvey made her Tonight Show debut with a peculiar solo performance of the title track from her second album, Rid of Me. Her black hair looked crunchy and wet, so shellacked with product it gleamed. Sloppy streaks of raspberry lip liner ringed her mouth, and thick brows framed eyes that radiated mischief.

Harvey began her collaboration with theatre director Ivo van Hove late 2018 for a modern stage adaptation of the classic 1950 Academy Award-winning film. Ivo loved this idea and thought that it would be good for Eve to sing a song too, so I worked on songs that had the emotion and lyrics that would be fitting for their characters at the time they appear in the play.

PJ Harvey is an abbreviation of singer-songwriter Polly Jean Harvey (b. 9 Oct 1969 in Yeovil and raised in nearby Corscombe, Dorset, England) and a name of two acts. First was a Harvey-led trio, formed in 1991 with Rob Ellis (drums) and Steve Vaughan (bass), which débuted with Dry (Mar 1992). Overlapping with the trio, Harvey reused the name for solo work, inaugurated by 4-Track Demos (Oct 1993).
