Burt Freeman Bacharach (/ˈbækəræk/ BAK-ə-rak; born May 12, 1928) is an American composer, songwriter, record producer, pianist, and singer who has composed hundreds of pop songs from the late 1950s through the 1980s, many in collaboration with lyricist Hal David. A six-time Grammy Award winner and three-time Academy Award winner, Bacharach's songs have been recorded by more than 1,000 different artists. As of 2014, he had written 73 US and 52 UK Top 40 hits.

Connie Francis recorded the song for her 1968 album, Connie Francis Sings Bacharach & David. Florence Ballard recorded a version in 1968 for her shelved solo debut album for ABC Records; after her firing from the Supremes and departure from Motown. The incomplete album was left unreleased until the 2001 compilation The Supreme Florence Ballard. Kiki Dee recorded a version of the song in 1969 for Motown Records during her work on the Great Expectations album, but the song was not released until 2005 on the retrospective album Kiki Dee – Love Makes the World Go Round: The Motown Collection. Lyricist Hal David, Bacharach’s primary collaborator, supplied Bacharach’s music with tart lyrics worthy of the best Tin Pan Alley composers. David’s unsentimental, bittersweet lyrics were often in striking contrast to Bacharach’s soaring melodies. From 1958-61 Burt toured Europe and America as musical director for Marlene Dietrich. During this period, three Bacharach-composed songs became big hits: Please Stay by the Drifters, Tower of Strength by Gene McDaniel (with lyrics by Bob Hilliard) and Baby It’s You by the Shirelles (lyrics by Hal’s brother Mack David and Barney Williams). All three were recorded in 1961.

The 1970 double LP Johnny Mathis Sings the Music of Bacharach & Kaempfert paired an LP of new recordings of Bert Kaempfert songs with a compilation of Burt Bacharach songs Mathis recorded between 1959 and 1969. Combining old material with new had the net effect of making Sings the Music of Bacharach & Kaempfert seem stuffier than its 1970 companion, Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head, which concentrated on recent charting hits that had been quickly adopted as modern standards.
