The Slits' sound and attitude became increasingly experimental and avant-garde during the early 1980s, when they formed an alliance with Bristol post-punk band The Pop Group, sharing drummer Bruce Smith and releasing a joint single, "In the Beginning There Was Rhythm/Where There's a Will There's a Way" (Y Records). This was followed by a bizarre, uncommercial, untitled album of mostly homemade demo recordings, and a few more singles. The band toured widely and released another album, Return of the Giant Slits before breaking up in early 1982

Labeling The Slits groundbreaking just doesn’t (pardon the pun) cut it. No other post-punk band was as confrontational-an all-female trio calling themselves The Slits and posing muddily topless on their debut album cover was about as in-your-face as a feminist statement gets - or as determinedly uncommercial. Indeed, after being dropped by their label, Island, despite having made Cut, of the signature albums of the era, Viv Albertine, Tessa Pollitt, and Ari Up treated Sony, their new label, to an even more radical record, 1981’s Return of the Giant Slits.

The Story of the Slits by Zoe Street Howe was published in the UK by Omnibus Press in July 2009, a full-length album entitled Trapped Animal was released in 2009, and the band continued to perform live. Group founder Ari Up died in October 2010, the bands final work, the video for the song Lazy Slam from Trapped Animal, was released posthumously according to Ari Ups wishes.
After releasing just one more full-length, 1981's Return of the Giant Slits, the group disbanded. Sadly, this album is in print only as a Japanese import. But it is Cut that established the legacy of the Slits, whose music helped spawn the riot grrrl generation of all-female punk-inspired bands of the 1990s. In the late-'70s, women in rock were almost exclusively relegated to vocal duties. Would we have a Rock.
Return of the Giant Slits is the second studio album by The Slits, released in 1981 by CBS Records on LP and cassette. In comparison with its widely acclaimed predecessor, Cut, released in 1979, it showcases a softer, more experimental sound, inspired by African music. Several months after its release The Slits disbanded
