Les Illuminations (The Illuminations), Op. 18, is a song cycle by Benjamin Britten, first performed in 1940. It is composed for soprano or tenor soloist and string orchestra, and sets verse and prose poems written in 1872–1873 by Arthur Rimbaud, part of his collection Les Illuminations. Britten began writing the cycle in Suffolk in March 1939 and completed it a few months later in the United States. It was the first of his song cycles to gain widespread popularity

Les Illuminations" was also recorded in 1954 while the "Nocturne" was recorded in 1960. Incidentally, for the historically minded, the Decca Eloquence disc states that the recording of the "Serenade for Tenor, Horn & Strings" and "Les Illuminations" are first releases on CD. Both recordings are wonderful and of course, featuring Peter Pears for whom Britten composed the songs makes them both hallmarks against which all other recordings will be compared.

Tenor Ian Bostridge brings together three of Britten 's most important song cycles: Serenade for tenor, horn and strings, Les Illuminations, and Nocturne. His performances are notable for their dramatic range, particularly the power and passion and vocal abandon he brings to these works. He fully inhabits the music, which leads to some daring interpretive choices  . Ian Bostridge, Simon Rattle.
