In 1843, the musical director of the Gewandhaus orchestra, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, founded the first higher education institution for musicians in Germany, the Leipziger Conservatorium der Musik, and brought in renowned teachers such as the pianist Ignaz Moscheles and, for a short period, his friend Robert Schumann.

This disc has many things going for it. It has interesting repertoire: Schumann's Piano Quartet in E flat major and the relatively rarely recorded Piano Sextet in D major by Mendelssohn and, as a bonus, the world-premiere recording of Mendelssohn's arrangement for piano and string quintet of the Adagio from his Second Piano Concerto

Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (3 February 1809 – 4 November 1847), born and widely known as Felix Mendelssohn, was a German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period. Mendelssohn's compositions include symphonies, concertos, piano music and chamber music.

Paul Mendelssohn Bartholdy (born Paul Felix Abraham Mendelssohn Bartholdy; 18 January 1841, Leipzig – 17 February 1880, Berlin) was a German chemist and a pioneer in the manufacture of aniline dye. He co-founded the Aktien-Gesellschaft für Anilin-Fabrikation (AGFA), a German chemical company. He is not to be confused with his uncle, the banker Paul y, who was the son of his grandfather Abraham Mendelssohn Bartholdy.
