Among the Ghosts is more measured and introspective than one might expect from Lucero, and the performances (most tracked live in the studio) are more low key, making greater use of dynamics and less stomp-down force. But this is clearly a Lucero album, and their music, unapologetically muscular, is still mighty even when they turn things down a bit, and the finale, "For the Lonely Ones," closes out the set with a potent shot of life-affirming rock & roll that feels like a light at the end of the tunnel

Lucero's July 27th release 'Among The Ghosts' is some of songwriter Ben Nichols best work in a while. Standout tracks include "Among The Ghosts", To My Dearest Wife, and "Bottom of the Sea". Lucero is currently on tour, as well as opening for Frank Turner. If you had to pick one song on the album that was quintessentially Lucero, this is the Lucero-est. The album closes with the driving boogie of For The Lonely Ones, complete with the full set of horns and drummer Roy Berry’s impeccable timing. There’s not a lot to criticize on the album, maybe that Always Been You seems like a Lucero song they’ve already written and recorded thirty times (it’s still a great son. ust formulaic), or that the album could use another faster, danceable track outside of For The Lonely Ones (people still mosh at Lucero shows and it is weird let. me tell you).
