On Live at Café Amores, recorded in 1995 in Hōfu, Japan, he improvises five extended pieces replete with circular breathing and multiphonic techniques, similar to those used by more exuberant players in the free milieu, but appearing here with singular austerity. The mood shifts between sad melancholy and wel-paced spirituality, with the occasional - albeit rare - outburst of nervous energy, making this a very entertaining album. Kang Ji-hwan (born Jo Tae-gyu on March 20, 1977) is a South Korean actor. Jo Tae-gyu made his acting debut in musical theatre in 2001, in the Korean stagings of popular musicals The Rocky Horror Show and Grease

It is also not a straight classical sound nor does Hwan sound like any of the well-known free jazz players. He gets a dry sound, splintery like a stalk of cut bamboo. And although the sound isn't attractive to the ear at first, it is rewarding listening if one concentrates on his variations and improvising moves. By the mid-'90s he was one of very few improvisers from his country who had made recordings that had circulated in the West.

The Kang Tae-Hwan Trio consisted of Mr. Hwan on alto sax, Choi Sun-Bae on trumpet and Kim Dae-Hwan on drums & percussion. Ten years after this first meeting with the Korean & Japanese musicians, this concert was recorded at Romanisches Cafe in Roppongi, Tokyo. The quartet is half Korean, Sun Bae and Dae Hwan, and half Japanese: Junji Hirose and Motorharu Yoshizawa.
