One Foot in Hell is the third studio album by the American heavy metal band Cirith Ungol. The original LP was produced by Brian Slagel and Cirith Ungol. It was released in August 1986 on Metal Blade Records and re-released in March 1999 by Metal Blade Records on CD. Greg Lindstrom said in an interview: It's an excellent album although I thought the songs overall were not as strong as King of the Dead, and Flint’s bass seems to have gotten lost in the mix.

In many ways, One Foot in Hell is a continuation of King of the Dead, but also condenses it. It is worth noting that although both albums feature eight tracks, One Foot in Hell is a full 10 minutes shorter. One can correctly guess from this that the arrangements are thus stripped pretty bare. However, it soon becomes apparent that this is indeed Cirith Ungol's most metal album to date, thanks indeed to this stripped down aesthetic. Perhaps a contributing factor to this is the absence of Greg Lindstrom, who wrote most of the band's early material, and despite having left before King of the Dead was recorded, helped write most of that album. Despite that, this is a lean, mean album, a muscular affair unlike any other by Cirith Ungol.

Never the greatest of heavy metal bands to begin with (although no one could ever accuse them of sounding like anyone else), Los Angeles' Cirith Ungol were really starting to overstay their welcome come album number three, 1986's One Foot in Hell. Where previous efforts like 1981's Frost & Fire and 1984's King of the Dead had contained the odd American proto-metal classic and enough songwriting inventiveness to counter the band's utterly uncommercial talents, One Foot in Hell sounded very tired and uninspired.

Cirith Ungol's third album features less emphasis on lengthy, epic, prog-tinged material and more on the simplistic, more straightforward side of songwriting. That said, whilst many would fear the worst (the idea that the band would opt for a more half-hearted, chart-bothering affair must have seemed inevitable at the time of the album's release), the band's instrumental performance is still top notch and certainly consistent as always. One foot in Hell isn't quite as good as its predecessor, but still surely deserves a place in any metal fan's album collection. What we have here is simply another collection of more or less classic, consistent, straight edge heavy metal tunes from a band who were at this point in their prime, and once again you can see just why Cirith Ungol are hailed worldwide as a direct influence on some of the top doom/heavy metal bands today.
