Recorded while Dunckel and regular collaborator Nicolas Godin were working on the recent Charlotte Gainsbourg album, Darkel has the spare-time feel of a B-side collection, with none of Gainsbourg's breathless charisma. While several of the songs evoke the woozy romance of Air's slower tracks, the usual aplomb of Dunckel's day job is lacking, so many fans may want to hold out for the new Air album due next year. Still, Darkel isn't without its surprises. The record occasionally brims with the unlikely early 1970s idealism of solo John Lennon

Full of pop melodies, slow piano parts, and an attempt at eletronic rebellion against television (not the band). His inability to do so is witnessed in this album, but what he does well is what he is used to, creating a relaxed atmosphere for the songs to be played on. The first thing that becomes apparent about this release is where these tracks are comin' from. Created in the mold of electronica powered pop dities, it would seem Darckel is trying to take an nontraditional approach to making traditional music.

Darkel is a pleasant surprise, and i'd say its on par with other Air albums. Album is lush, dreamy pop music; and is t more focused than the last 2 Air albums. It's not as ambitious, but in a good way. Darkel seems like a comfortable fit for the this air member's solo debut and is refreshing, fun, and gentle at the same time. 0 of 0 users found this helpful.
