The Dock of the Bay is the first of a number of posthumously released Otis Redding albums, and his seventh studio album. It contains a number of singles and B-sides dating back to 1965 and one of his best known songs, the posthumous hit "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay". In 2003, the album was ranked number 161 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Otis Redding wrote the first verse of the song, under the abbreviated title "Dock of the Bay," on his promoter Bill Graham's rented houseboat at Waldo Point in Sausalito, California in August 1967. Many songs by Otis Redding were co-written was guitarist Steve Cropper. This song wasn't an exception. The song's two co-writers exchanged ideas while playing the song. Steve Cropper was at the studio when Otis Redding called his from the Memphis airport.

Dock of the Bay is, indeed, a mixed bag of singles and B-sides going back to July of 1965, one hit duet with Carla Thomas, and two, previously unissued tracks from 1966 and 1967. There's little cohesion, stylistic or otherwise, in the songs, especially when the title track is taken into consideration - nothing else here resembles it, for the obvious reason that Redding never had a chance to follow it up. Despite the mix-and-match nature of the album, however, this is an impossible record not to love.

I left my home in Georgia Headed for the 'Frisco bay Cause I've had nothing to live for And look like nothin's gonna come my way. So I'm just gonna sit on the dock of the bay Watching the tide roll away Ooo, I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay Wastin' time. Now, I'm just gonna sit at the dock of the bay Watching the tide roll away Oooo-wee, sittin' on the dock of the bay Wastin' time. About (Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.

This was so unlike any other Otis Redding composition that Stax Records chief Jim Stewart did not want the song released in any form - even after hearing both Redding and Cropper insist that it would be his first single. Stewart relented when he heard the finished master recording put together by Cropper after Redding's death. The hit potential was obvious when this song was being recorded The Dell reached on September 21st, 1969 with "Oh, What a Night".
