January 14, 1966 - January 16, 1966. Lighthouse, Hermosa Beach, CA. The Lighthouse, Hermosa Beach, CA. Submit Corrections. Because the Jazz Crusaders in the early '70s dropped the "Jazz" from their name and later in the decade veered much closer to R&B and pop music than they had earlier, it is easy to forget just how strong a jazz group they were in the 1960s. This CD reissues one of their rarer sessions, augmenting the original seven-song LP program (highlighted by "Blues Up Tight," "Doin' That Thing," and "Milestones") with previously unissued versions of "'Round Midnight" and John Coltrane's "Some Other Blues.

Exclusive Prime pricing. Live at the Lighthouse '66. "Please retry". An excellent live recording from the fabled Lighthouse club. Expect intrumental prowess and straight ahead jazz with no extras. After all this was the JAZZ Crusaders, before they dropped the first word in their name and became more of a funk-jazz hybrid in the 70s. I love that period too, but this 1966 recording is quite different from the band's sound that evolved the following decade.
Wilton Lewis Felder (August 31, 1940 – September 27, 2015) was an American saxophone and bass player, and is best known as a founding member of The Jazz Crusaders, later known as The Crusaders. Felder was born in Houston, Texas and studied music at Texas Southern University. Felder, Wayne Henderson, Joe Sample, and Stix Hooper founded their group while in high school in Houston.
