The little red hen had an idea. She would plant the seeds. The little red hen asked her friends, "Who will help me plant the seeds ?" "Not I," barked the lazy dog. Not I," purred the sleepy cat When all the wheat was cut, the little red hen asked her friends, "Who will help me take the wheat to the mill to be ground into flour ?" "Not I," barked the lazy dog. Not I," purred the sleepy cat. Not I," quacked the noisy yellow duck. Then I will," said the little red hen.

A Little Red Hen lived in a barnyard. She spent almost all of her time walking about the barnyard in her picketty-pecketty fashion, scratching everywhere for worms. She dearly loved fat, delicious worms and felt they were absolutely necessary to the health of her children.

Little Red Hen found a grain of wheat. Who will plant this? she asked. Not I, said the cat. Not I, said the goose. Not I, said the rat. Then I will, said Little Red Hen. So she buried the wheat in the ground. After a while it grew up yellow and ripe.

She called her chicks and they all had a feast. You can also download this story in PDF. I hope you all enjoyed the story The Little Red Hen - English Short Stories for Kids.

In a real-world version, the little red hen never again baked bread and the farmyard suffered Greek-style chaos when the animals riding in the wagon suddenly discovered there was nobody left to pull the wagon. If this fable seems familiar, you may be thinking about the post that used beer to explain the tax system.
