Artist: Akron/Family. Release: Deep Oceans Records, May, 2009. One minute into the six minute long, ting opener, Everyone Is Guilty, I was hooked. Set ‘Em Wild, Set ‘Em Free is the fifth studio album release from the Williamsburg, Brooklyn-based three-man band Akron/Family. It was also the band’s first self-produced album since leaving their original label, Young God Records, founded by Michael Gira, frontman of the ’80’s New York no-wave band Swans.

In September 2008, one-time New Yorkers Akron/Family played a fierce, sometimes transcendent 90-minute set at London's Luminaire. Their third full-length, Love is Simple, had come out the year before; then the band had announced the departure of founding member Ryan Vanderhoof and their own departure from Michael Gira's Young God Records. Throughout the album, horns sigh with contentment or resignation; guitar lines turn upwards like shrugged shoulders, bounce like heartbeats or pierce a cluttered soundscape like a shout. Even the freakout jam of 'MBF' sounds like nothing so much as Elvis Costello's über-analogue instrumental pile-up at the start of 'Man Out of Time'. The mystery Akron/Family weave is more primal than mere sonic trickery. Recorded music only ever captures a fleeting snapshot of an idea of a sound, one still frame in an imaginary reel of a million variations.

My disenchantment with "Set Em Wild. is not the usual "uh, the band has changed its style, and I don't like this new style" - Akron/Family is using the same musical vocabulary but their execution of it is much less effective here than in previous efforts. Their experiments definitely do not all find equal success, yet "Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free", their 4th album (and my first experience with the band), is an incredibly listenable album. After a little while, the listener knows each track will likely be distinct and stylistically different from the rest, even if they aren't all as compelling as "River" or "Creatures", the two best songs on the album, by far.

Akron/Family is a folk-influenced experimental rock band that formed in 2002, and is currently based in New York on the Dead Oceans label. Though each member of the band - Miles Seaton, Seth Olinsky, Dana Janssen and formerly Ryan Vanderhoof - can be relegated to loosely defined roles (drummer, guitarist, bassist, vocalist), all of them in fact play several instruments and sing, as evidenced by their shows and recorded material.

On new album Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free, though, that changes, as the band delivers a masterpiece. Throughout this disc, the group reveals the side that loves the precise, unexpected harmonies as well as the side that loves to destroy a crowd. It's hard to now whether to cite the Byrds, Sonic Youth,.
