Complete your The Funkees collection.
Formed in eastern Nigeria and later based out of London, The Funkees set themselves apart from their highlife and Afrobeat contemporaries in the ‘70s with a bewitching Afrorock brew of wah-wah guitars, distorted riffs, prog-rock breakdowns, and steamy rhythms. Dancing Time compiles some truly surprising cuts from their LPs and singles: The spooky psych groove of Slipping Into Darkness is like West Africa’s answer to Funkadelic, and Salem turns the Islamic tenet There is no god but God into a freaky disco sing-along. The Funkees were the most admired of all groups in eastern Nigeria at that time," recalls Foundars 15's Mashal Udo. "The level of professionalism, the maturity of their sound was so much beyond what anybody else was doing. Everybody who picked up an instrument to play music aimed to be like them". In the early 1970s The Funkees were the number-one east Nigerian band and the only outfit to seriously challenge the popular Lagos based rock combos MonoMono and BLO. Full of confidence it wasn't long before they were looking further afield and had packed their guitars. This collection features for the first time all of their Nigerian 45s alongside the best of their UK album material and is accompanied by a full interview with original member Sonny Akpan. Dancing Time by the Funkees is an album I heard in Aba in Nigeria all those years ago and it has not lost any of it's appeal. The track Akula is one of my favourite tracks and reminds me of how disputes are settled between individuals with clenched fists. Another track that catches the eye is the track, Dancing in the Nude. Almost 80 minutes of super bad funk-rock from Nigeria. The sound is clean and dirty, loose and tight, just right! I would have LOVED to party with these guys, back in the 70's, but Nigeria is kinda far away and anyway now they have all moved on to other things in other lives, I will have to settle for wild dance parties in my living room, with my 2 little toddlers boogeying so joyfully it hurts from laughing.
