Australian Crawl (often called Aussie Crawl or The Crawl by fans) were an Australian rock band founded by James Reyne (lead vocals/piano), Brad Robinson (rhythm guitar), Paul Williams (bass), Simon Binks (lead guitar) and David Reyne (drums) in 1978. David Reyne soon left and was replaced by Bill McDonough (drums, percussion). They were later joined by his brother Guy McDonough (vocals, rhythm guitar). The band was named after the front crawl swimming style also known as the Australian crawl.

The American version of this album, released on Geffen in 1984, bore the title Semantics, and served as more of a compilation of the Crawl's career to date. Australian Crawl and James Reyne: The Definitive Collection was a 2 disc DVD; the first disc featured 15 video clips of Australian Crawl songs, two live appearances, two television appearances and a number of extras including a rare recorded performance by Spiff Rouch (the earliest incarnation of Australian Crawl). With the lineup changes sorted, Australian Crawl went on to release their final album: Between a Rock and a Hard Place. The album was a commercial disaster. It peaked at but quickly left the charts. This was the beginning of the end for Australian Crawl. They performed various live performances and recorded The Final Wave before disbanding in 1986 to allow the members to substantiate their visions for solo careers. It is a recording of the band's final Melbourne concert on 27 January 1986. The album reached on the Australian album charts upon its release.
