Rakotozafy was one of the foremost exponents of the valiha (Malagasy zither). He was born in 1938 in the Lake Alaotra region of Madagascar. He made a number of recordings in 1962, which were released by Discomad, but then disappeared from view until shortly before his death c. 1968.

Rakotozafy Valiha Malaza: 7. Mandrosa Lahy Maeva (Music Video). Released: July 1, 1995. Originally Released: 2002. Label: Globe Style This re-release of the '60s recordings of the instrument's best-known master is much the best of Globestyle's Malagasy issues, and a worthy substitute for the vanished Ocora valiha album (which also, incidentally, included cuts by Rakotozafy). 42% OFF. Cafe Roma: 48 Original Italian Classics (2-CD). Cafe Italia: 75 Original Italian Classics (3-CD).

Salama'nareo Tompoko O!

Valiha Malaza by Rakotozafy on Globestyle. During this trip we heard about a legendary musician: Rakotozafy. He played a souped-up, enlarged version of the island's national instrument the valiha (a multi-stringed box-shaped zither also known as the marovany). This hot-rodding increased the range and sound of the instrument and gave him a sound not unlike a bluesman's national steel guitar.

Audio CD, Import, August 8, 1995. The only disappointment is that we don't have more recordings of Rakotozafy displaying his absolute mastery of not only the Valiha but also the music of Madagascar. It is truly hypnotic.
