On Horse and Fish, Brazilian singer, songwriter and t Vinicius Cantuaria has realized a brilliant fusion of cool jazz and bossa nova that, while remaining utterly contemporary in feel, recalls the pioneering work of Cantuarias life-long inspirations: Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Bill Evans and Antonio Carlos Jobim. The New York Times described Cantuaria as an artist "confident enough to choose understatement. One could call his approach on Horse and Fish a kind of sensual minimalism. Preternaturally gifted trumpeter Michael Leonhart wrote horn arrangements for Steely Dans 2000 comeback album, Two Against Nature, and played on the duos European and Japanese tours. Brazilian drumming innovator Paulo Braga toured and recorded with Jobim for 15 years, and hes collaborated with many bossa nova and jazz legends.
Horse and Fish is Brazilian guitarist and composer Vinicius Cantuaria's fifth studio outing and his sixth overall. It is in some ways a radical departure and in others a full maturation of the hints and promises he's made since his debut offering, Sol Na Cara, in 1997. Cantuaria - playing electric and acoustic guitars - and his sextet (which includes the wonderful Paul Socolow on bass and the lyrical impressionistic trumpeter Michael Leonhart) execute a program of samba classics and originals read through a cooking meld of Latin and Brazilian jazz and pop atmospherics
Horse and Fish delivers a crisp modern fusion of smoochy bossa and more upbeat. Vinicius Cantuária is arguably the current master of the subliminally sensual. His stirring, sprawling cover of Gilberto Gil's "Procissao", which opens this, his 11th studio album, sets the mood with a mere ripple of subterranean bass and voice at the outset. This surges slowly over nine minutes plus only as far as a plangent trumpet solo by Michael Leonhart - the music doesn't so much progress as open up and out.

Vinicius Cantuaria was something of a star in Brazil, yet the local music industry drove him to flee to New York. Once there, he was quickly adopted by the Knitting Factory crowd and has played often with David Byrne, Arto Lindsay, Laurie Anderson and other avant suspects. Yet where VC really shines is on his own albums, which find him blending a subtle mosaic of sounds rooted in bossa nova.
