Cocaine" is a song written and recorded in 1976 by singer-songwriter J. J. Cale. The song was popularized by Eric Clapton after his cover version was released on the 1977 album Slowhand. Glyn Johns produced the Clapton recording, which was released on the 1977 album Slowhand. A live version of "Cocaine" from the album Just One Night charted on the Billboard Hot 100 as the B-side of "Tulsa Time", which was a No. 30 hit in 1980.

Cale recorded "Cocaine" on his fourth album, Troubadour, which was released in 1976, and issued the song as the B-side of his single "Hey Baby," which was his last charting song as an artist, making US. When Clapton was looking for songs for his Slowhand album, he once again looked to Cale, and chose "Cocaine," which became the first song on the set. Clapton would later cover Cale's song "Travelin' Light," and in 2006, the pair teamed up to record an album together called The Road To Escondido. During the Slowhand sessions, Clapton and his band got to see a . Cale concert, and Cale brought Clapton on stage to duet on this song. This is one of Clapton's most famous songs, but the studio version was never released as a single.

The album was Clapton’s tribute to his musical heroes and contained cover versions of blues classics. 1997 brought an excursion into electronica with the release of TDF’s Retail Therapy. Eric posed as X-Sample in the studio band TDF. In 1998, he released the soul-influenced Pilgrim, his first album of all new material in nine years. Eric had long admired Cale’s work, having recorded versions of After Midnight, Cocaine, and Travelin’ Light. The album soon turned into a collaborative effort. The Road To Escondido was released to critical acclaim in November 2007. An unflinching documentary about his life, Eric Clapton: Life In 12 Bars premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2017.
