Franz Ferdinand is the self-titled debut studio album by Scottish indie rock band Franz Ferdinand. It was released on 9 February 2004 through the Domino Recording Company. It was recorded during 2003 at Gula Studios in Malmö, Sweden and was co-produced by the band and Tore Johansson. It entered the United Kingdom album charts at number three in February 2004 and contains the UK top ten singles "Take Me Out" and "The Dark of the Matinée" as well as UK top 20 hit "Michael".

Ferdinand Försch studierte von 1972 bis 1980 Komposition, Perkussion und Elektronische Musik in Würzburg und Stuttgart. Betätigte sich Anfang der 1980er Jahre auch unter dem Pseudonym Herbert F. Bairy als Rockmusiker. 1982 lernte er während eines mehrwöchigen Seminars in England den amerikanischen en John Cage kennen, der ihn für sein weiteres Schaffen inspirierte. Försch arbeitete immer wieder mit Musikern unterschiedlicher ethnischer und stilistischer Herkunft zusammen wie in dem Duo-Projekt „Von Bach bis Hendrix mit dem Geiger Tracy Silverman aus Nashville oder mit dem kalifornischen Gitarristen David Tanenbaum und dem indischen Perkussionisten Trilok Gurtu.

Like all lasting records, Franz Ferdinand steps up to the plate and boldly bangs on the door to stardom. There's no consideration for what trends have just come and gone. This is an album as much about preening and posing as passion, that’ll have you poring over the lyrics for an age. The fear that they couldn’t match their first two singles has proved unfounded.

Franz Ferdinand (the actual person, that is) used to be the very powerful archduke of Austria, and his brutal assasination eventually led a little crisis straight into WWI. But I'm not here to exactly give a history lesson. Maybe now you can see why a group of very determined Scottish friends decided to go for this kind of band name. Franz Ferdinand, (the band this time) started out playing at an abandoned warehouse in the Gorbals which they named "the Chateau" in early 2000.
