Street-Legal is the 18th studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on June 15, 1978 by Columbia Records. The album was a departure for Dylan, who uses a large pop-rock band including female backing vocalists. Before work began on Street-Legal, Dylan's personal life underwent a major change. In February 1977, Dylan spent several days at Gold Star Studios where Leonard Cohen was recording a new album, Death of a Ladies' Man, with Phil Spector and Allen Ginsberg.

Before work began on Street Legal, Dylan's personal life underwent a major change. In February 1977, Dylan spent several days at Gold Star Studios where Leonard Cohen was recording a new album, Death of a Ladies Man, with Phil Spector and Allen Ginsberg. After one session where Dylan and others indulged in a substantial amount of alcohol, Dylan returned to his Malibu home with an old friend of Cohen's, a woman named Malka.

Street-Legal," this band, this transitional Dylan, it all combined into one heck of a tour. The live 1978 material is amazing, and I hope a future Bootleg Series release chronicles the many highlights of the era. And just how highly do I value "Street-Legal," you might ask? Pretty darn high. It's one of the albums that perk me up, it involves me, and I find myself humming along, singing along, getting carried away. It's no "Blood on the Tracks," it won't ever eclipse my love for "Love and.

The first one I got had a scratchy sound (non-fill issues), but the second one was sounding pristine and clear! Looking at the vinyl you can see it is not shiny and the damned papersleeve left signs (was it pressed in France by MPO?), but SST from Germany where the master was probably made has done a very good job. The mix is astoundingly good, it looks as if it is based on the one from 1999 but is is much warmer and the instruments, which were separated in a sterile manner by Don DeVito are now connecting in a great way without losing there definition! The voice of Dylan is much more upfront and very natural, less whiny, almost with the sharpness he had on Desire, and the choir is revelated as very soulful and more in sync with Dylan, not as intrusive as on the other editions, so that No Time to Think really swings now. Senor and We Better Talk This Over have now the feeling as if they are on Blonde on Blonde, super! Changing of the Guards has no more drop outs and rocks! Where Are You Tonight tears the walls down now. It is unbelievable: buy it and hope for a good pressing like I got now!

The remix is awesome but my copy is plagued with wow and flutter - tonearm dancing around like a drunk driver walking the line and the pitch is all over the place - any one else? This one's gotta go back.

Definitely 1999 Re-Mix. Label timings incorrect as Changing of the Guards is 7:02 and not 6:36 as printed. Quiet pressing, but was hoping for the original mix that was remastered and released exclusively on the 2013 Complete Album Collection CD box.

It's good! Finally a decent vinyl pressing of Street Legal. Way better than the 2000 and 2010 Simply Vinyl releases. It's most likely taken from the digital remasters, but I compared it to my CD copy of the remaster and I think it's slightly better than that. Bass, and all instruments seem more defined and vocals are more up front. So, all in all, I'd say this is the best version of Street Legal to be released, yet.

Probably the only album of Dylan's that sounds better on CD than on vinyl. The late 90's CD remaster is far superior to this pressing.

This 2000 Simply Vinyl reissue is 100% the definitive version of the album on vinyl; the original pressing was a real botched job and the mastering is shockingly poor for a big-name major label album. In particular, the drums and bass sounded so muddy on the original that it really limits the enjoyability of that version. In 1999 the album was remixed and remastered and this pressing utilises that mix, which is VASTLY superior to the original. Everything has its own space on this version and the rhythm section finally sounds great (the cymbals, in particular, are really lovely on this version). The pressing itself is excellent and this very much is how the album always should have sounded. If you want the best version of Street-Legal on wax, pick this one up, not an original.

After this album was remastered by Don DeVito in 1999 (see r29919490), it came out sounding a whole lot better. But I still prefer the swampiness, confusion and despair in this version after listening to it daily while breaking up with the first love of my life.
Doomwarden
Very different sound to Desire, there's quite a rich heavy sound on a lot of these songs. This was made after the custody battle for his kids and while there is not one overriding theme through the whole album, most of the songs are about failed/failing relationships, and unfortunately Dylan does tend to sound like a drunken balladeer...This is no Blood on the Tracks. The band is a lot tighter than on Desire but not so sure the big band sound goes so well with all of the tunes. Changing of the Guards and New Pony are both strong tunes, the backing singers, piano and heavy guitar riff sound good; Senor is the strongest song on the album and is alone worth the entrance fee. The album ends with Where are You Tonight (which sounds like an amalgamation of many Dylan tunes) which again utilizes the band well, but other than that the rest is a bit weak. Maybe the songs would have sounded better with a different rendering.

If you want to buy "Street-Legal" on vinyl then go for the (now deleted) Simply Vinyl reissue. While the front cover reproduction is not so good (too much red), the music itself sounds way better than on the original release which was mastered poorly back in 1978. Here you get the bright and fat sound of the much praised 1999 remaster that was also used for several cd versions. So crank up the volume and give this underrated album a second chance!
