Wesendonck Lieder, WWV 91, is the common name of a set of five songs for female voice and piano by Richard Wagner, Fünf Gedichte für eine Frauenstimme (Five Poems for a Female Voice). He set five poems by Mathilde Wesendonck while he was working on his opera Tristan und Isolde. The songs, together with the Siegfried Idyll, are the two non-operatic works by Wagner most regularly performed.

EMI Classics' represents the work of Norwegian soprano Kirsten Flagstad in its Great Artists of the Century series through a collection entitled Wagner: Wesendonck-Lieder - Arias. Flagstad, unlike most sopranos, improved with age like a fine wine, with her postwar EMI recordings being Flagstad's latest and considered her best. These selections represent Flagstad in her most essential element: she was strongly associated with the Wesendonck Lieder and no less than ten recordings have appeared, under legitimate cover or not so, of Flagstad in this cycle.

Initially, this set of five songs was published under the title of Fünf Gedichte für eine Frauenstimme ( Five Poems for a Woman’s Voice ), but they’re now known as the Wesendonck-Lieder, after Mathilde Wesendonck, the wife of one of Wagner’s patrons who wrote the poems that serve as texts. The set premiered in Mainz in 1862, with soprano Emilie Genast as soloist. The set was originally written for voice and piano, but since has been orchestrated by numerous composers. It has also been recorded by male singers. Wesendonck-Lieder Q&A.
