Debut album from Norwegian singer-songwriter, t SILJE NES. 'Ames Room' announces the emergence of a hugely talented and distinctive young artist. Whilst creating a sound-world entirely her own, 'Ames Room' shows a similar single-mindedness and adventurousness to peers such as TUJIKO NORIKO or BJORK or as well as the homespun beauty of bands such as THE PASTELS, PRAM, or COLEN. Broad ranging and full of character, the album moves from languid dream-pop to stomping, upbeat tracks, to more introspective or abstract numbers.

Yellow EP by Silje Nes, released 17 March 2008 1. Ames Room 2. Kast 3. Down Snaked a Ladder 4. Third Remove Following the successful release earlier this year of her debut album, ‘Ames Room’, as well as some great recent live shows, we are pleased to announce the release of this digital-only EP from Norwegian singer-songwriter, t, Silje Nes. Headed by ‘Ames Room’ - one of the album’s standout songs - the EP also features three exclusive, previously unreleased tracks, all created in the same period as the album. Silje grew up in the tiny town of Leikanger, in Sognefjord, the largest fjord in Norway, before moving to the larger, rainy town of Bergen in 2000. She began making her own music in 2001, recording on 4-track demo software through a tiny inbuilt microphone on a laptop.

The first sound you hear on Silje Nes' debut album, Ames Room, is an ascending cascade of gulps, like water pouring out of a jug. In proper pitch, they could be a factory setting on a keyboard, but Nes (first name pronounced seel-YAH) modifies them slightly to sound more percussive and completely otherworldly. Those gulps appear throughout Ames Room, one of several repeating sounds- like her shimmery guitar tone and soft vocals, reminiscent of múm's Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir- that could be one instrument in a more traditional band lineup

Silje Nes. Ames Room. Even though many of the pieces on Silje Nes' debut album feature prominent melodies delivered in her wispy, winsome sing-song voice, it seems somehow imprecise to think to them as "songs" in the conventional sense.

Silje Nes: Ames Room. November 30 2007, 12:00am, The Times. The first album from the young Norwegian is an enjoyably sparse collection, likely to appeal to admirers of the similarly exotic Juana Molina. Songs such as Drown, built around a basic guitar arpeggio, the sleepy, pretty Dizzy Street and the unexpectedly limber Giant Disguise are like half-dreamt Polly Harvey demos.
