On Class Trip, the bandmembers come together fully and build on that concept with such beauty and grace that they sound as if they've been playing together all their lives.

Class Trip is an album by guitarist John Abercrombie with violinist Mark Feldman, bassist Marc Johnson, and drummer Joey Baron recorded in 2003 and released on the ECM label.

Abercrombie, violinist Mark Feldman, drummer Joey Baron, and bassist Marc Johnson gelled together inside the framework of the guitarist's increasingly open-ended compositions and became a unit that could articulate the most subtle of sonorities and intricate harmonic architectures. But they also revealed that they were entering the zone where they could actually stretch time and space. On Class Trip, the bandmembers come together fully and build on that concept with such beauty and grace that they sound as if they've been playing together all their lives.

John Abercrombie: Class Trip by John Kelman, published on April 24, 2004. Abercrombie has long had a penchant for 3/4 time, and there is no shortage of it on Class Trip, from the introspective "Risky Business" to the more intense "Descending Grace. But whether they are exploring the possibilities of waltz time on the playful "Cat Walk" or the alternating time signatures of the delicate title track, what makes this a remarkable record is the sheer inventiveness of the group and their ability to turn on a dime.

With the same line-up (Abercrombie, guitar; Mark Feldman, violin; Marc Johnson, double-bass; Joey Baron, drums) as 2002's great Cat 'n' Mouse, Class Trip mines a vein similar to that beautifully recorded chamberlike jazz, with even more spectacular results. This is ECM fully deploying its rapturous, ecstatic sonic palettes.

Only for completionists (0%). The ongoing, quietly relentless musical trek of guitar great John Abercrombie has been, and continues to be, a pleasure to witness. The album is indeed one long jam but there is more going on than just another of Abercrombie's forays into nu-jazz, and paints a lovely portrait of abstraction with dark-chocolate strokes and rich texture.
