La Belle et la Bête aka Beauty and the Beast. Jean Cocteau Original opera by Philip Glass written for the film. CAST: Jean Marais, Josette Day, Mila Parély, Nane Germon, Michel Auclair, Raoul Marco, Marcel André, Noël Blin. Beauty and the Beast (La Belle et la Bête) is a landmark feat of cinemaic fantasy in which master filmmaker Jean Cocteau conjures spectacular visions of enchantment, desire, and death that have never been equaled. Produced by André Paulvé. The new album features all new music including the world premiere recordings of new works by Philip Glass, Gavin Bryars, David Skidmore, Peter Martin, and Robert Dillon.

Glass transcends his usual soundtrack work this time by composing an opera dramatized by a film projected on a screen above the performers - the film in question being Jean Cocteau's La Belle et la Betê or Beauty and the Beast. This is truly a monumental accomplishment: music was composed and timed perfectly in sync with the action of the film and the artist toured major cities with this show. Music is provided by the Philip Glass Ensemble and other auxiliary players.

Publisher: Chester Music. La Belle et la Bête (1994). Opera based on the screenplay by Jean Cocteau. SYNOPSIS A subtle reflection on the life of an artist, Philip Glass' second opera based on works by Cocteau, in its original version performed in conjunction with the projected film (with the original soundtrack eliminated entirely). Presented as a simple fairy tale, it soon becomes clear that the story has taken on a broader and deeper subject - the very nature of the creative process. Through an extraordinary alchemy of the spirit, the ordinary world is transformed into a world of magic

Passages is a collaborative chamber music studio album co-composed by Ravi Shankar and Philip Glass, released in 1990 through Private Music. Consisting of arrangements by each of the composers around themes written by the other, the album's content is a hybrid of Hindustani classical music and Glass' distinct American minimal contemporary classical style. The album reached a peak position of number three on Billboard's Top World Music Albums chart.

The origins of Philip Glass’ La Belle et la Bête are indeed interesting. For many years Glass has had an interest in French film, and in particular a fascination with the works of Jean Cocteau, and in 1994 he decided to write a film score/opera based on Cocteau’s 1946 film of the same name, which was to be the third work by Glass based on a work by Cocteau.
