Greatest Sides, Vol. 1. MCA 8402.

The discography for the American singer Etta James consists of 28 studio albums, 3 live albums, and 6 compilations. She has also issued 58 singles, one of which, "The Wallflower (Dance with Me, Henry)," reached number 1 on the Rhythm and Blues Records chart in 1955. As a teenager in San Francisco, California in the early 1950s, James formed a singing trio, which attracted the attention of Johnny Otis, who helped her sign a recording contract with Modern Records in 1954.

Just love her versatility and voice.

The Essential Etta James A. .Etta James Gabriel Mekler (of Steppenwolf, Kozmic Janis, Nolan Porter) introduces Etta to the rock audience with three Randy Newman covers plus, and it almost works. Blue Gardenia Churning out an album a year as she advances on 65, James has actually gotten better, settling into her iconicity more confidently than, for instance, Buddy Guy. Next to Aretha, she's the greatest black woman singer of the rock era hands down. Yet rock doesn't bring out the best in her, because it tempts her to overstate, and resisting temptation has never been her gift.

There are many Etta James collections out there. The standard-bearers thus far have been the Chess Box and the Essential Etta James. This set attempts to do something else and goes deep into her catalog to dig out the gems from her years with Modern, Argo, Cadet, Chess, Warner Brothers, Island, and Private Music/BMG, and presents the full spectrum of her five-decade career. As such, there are many different kinds of songs here revealing the complexity of the vocalist herself, and as such, thus becomes a real portrait of the artist. Juxtapose, for instance, early sides like The Wallflower Dance (Dance With Me Henry), with its wild R&B bravado and the deep soul-blues of All I Could Do Is Cry, the balladry of The Man I Love, the bone-crushing blues of The Sky Is Crying, and the torch song ballad technique on My Dearest Darling, and the despairing soul.

Her 1963 album Etta James Rocks the House was recorded live at the New Era club in Nashville and documents a formidable performer. In 1967 Leonard Chess, the founder of Chess Records, sent James to Alabama to record at Fame studios with the producer Rick Hall. The resulting sessions produced the roaring Tell Mama, which took her back to the R&B top 10. Tell Mama's B-side was I'd Rather Go Blind, a brooding, agonised ballad of loss and jealousy which now stands as James's most celebrated recording and one of the classic sides of soul music. The 1974 album Come a Little Closer, recorded while she was in rehab at a psychiatric hospital, features James at her best. A shift to Warner Brothers in 1978 did not return her to a wide audience and, although she often worked with major producers, James remained beloved more by critics and blues-soul aficionados than a mass audience.

Born Jamesetta Hawkins, Etta James was a Grammy Award-winning R&B/Blues/Soul singer best known for songs like Something’s Got a Hold On Me, I’d Rather Go Blind, and At Last. She grew up fatherless, and her mother had her at age fourteen. Because her mother had a habit of child neglect due to her having relationships with various men, James grew up in foster care mainly. She received vocal training from age five and saw her career largely take off in the 60’s. Though she faced major drug abuse, she earned her first Grammy nomination for an album in 1974 for the album Etta James (Only.
