I stumble across The Machine and their ironically titled album Calmer Than You Are. Almost instantly I find my calm, cool, and collect center. It begins with a crawling guitar that ignites a gentle sitar, end capping the melody. The vocals have a slight wah-wah quality giving a definite psychedelic nod to the beginning portion of this song. But don’t get too comfortable―the guitar explodes into your ear cavities for a solid romp in Rock & Roll paradise. Their entire album is an exercise in keeping Rock & Roll alive and well with unexpected pleasures in strange lands.

Fourth album from this Dutch trio. The Machine create long psychedelic jams but there is lots of rawness to their sound. Definitely a sludge/stoner rock vibe. The band does incorporate vocals into the mix but its not a big part of their sound. Formed in 2007, The Machine is a three-piece psychedelic rock band from the Netherlands, featuring David Eering (guitar/vocals), Davy Boogaard (drums) and Hans van Heemst (bass). Calmer Than You Are starts out with a menacing rumble on Moonward, where an Axe, Eugene bassline is gradually smothered by an approaching tsunami of distorted guitars. This breaks over at about the three minute mark, sweeping all before it, and leaving a backwash of guitar feedback, which morphs into a closing section of metallic mathrock. Remember, this is just one track we are talking about!

Calmer Than You Are is The Machine‘s fourth album. This time around, the band sports a more aggressive sound, but without compromising their extended psychedelic freak-outs.
