Riots Fire Down Under really caught my attention. This album explodes out of the gate and just rocks the house down track after track. Most impressive is the guitar attack led by Mark Reale's lead. Amazing ! Guy Sparanza's vocals are just right for this band, and reminds me of Buzz Sherman of Moxy. I wish that he would have stayed with Riot to do more. Riot's 2nd, 3rd, and 4th albumns Narita, Fire Down Under, and Restless Breed are killer heavy metal attacks done up right in american style. While they may be deemed as cultish even now these albums especially Fire Down Under, should be in every music fans collection! If you havent heard Fire Down Under you most definitely need to, alone with the Narita and Restless Breed. I can't beleve that something this good isnt a relevent part of Rock n Roll history. Riot should be one of the top metal bands to come out of the 1980s heavy metal scene.

Fire Down Under presents itself as the fusion between Rock City and Narita: it wants to be loud, but it's also polished and catchy, making therefore a solid yet fresh record. The band's line-up had to change, drums and bass needed new players. Thankfully, Sandy Slavin (drums) and Kip Leming (bass) proved to be good choices, and combined with the tested Reale-Ventura aggressive guitar couple they managed to create some really engaging musical rides. Basically, everything Riot attempted to make earlier is present here in a refined shape. Sadly, this is in fact the last Riot album featuring Guy Speranza on vocals, who will leave the band after the publishing of the record. Anyway, this didn't stop Riot from publishing their fourth studio effort "Restless Breed" the next year, with Rhett Forrester taking Speranza's place.

Fire Down Under is an absolute gem, a vastly overlooked rambunctious headbanger whose approach and execution are so deceptively simple that the final product is stunning in its quality. There are no long intricate compositions, no progressive epics, no head-spinning, fretboard-burning solos to be found here. Riot may be the first . I can say they put out one absolutely scintillating album with Fire Down Under. Despite my general ignorance of the historical background, I do know enough to understand the trends toward faster metal. As Boris said, this stuff is pretty nuts for 1981.
