The Penguin Cafe Orchestra (PCO) was an avant-pop band led by English guitarist Simon Jeffes. Co-founded with cellist Helen Liebmann, the band toured extensively during the 1980s and 1990s. The orchestra's sound is not easily categorized, but has elements of exuberant folk music and a minimalist aesthetic occasionally reminiscent of composers such as Philip Glass.

Jodi's "Waltz of the Roses" ball is part of Waltz Fest Northwest, four days of waltzing instruction and dancing at venues such as Om Culture, the Century Ballroom, Waltz etcetera and, for the Left Foot dance, the Bothell Sons of Norway hall, a place with a wonderful dance floor and sweet dancers. He’s one of the key reasons the Valse Café Orchestra proffers dance tunes that are arranged and performed with dancers of all levels in mind, and why you might say we’re the polar opposite of avant garde or experimental music. Phil insisted that if a piece of music doesn’t make it easier for you when you’re dancing, there’s no reason to play it.

The 14-piece orchestra consists of trumpeter Randall Murray, trombonist Tyrone Hill, seven reeds (including the perennials: tenorman John Gilmore, altoist Marshall Allen and Pat Patrick on alto), guitarist Carl LeBlanc and a four-piece rhythm section that includes two drummers.
